The iconic scene in “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” sticks with males when it comes to waxing. There has been no definitive study about male waxing, but it has become a trend in some areas.
Men’s trepidation stem from the fear of experiencing pain during the process. The aestheticians and bikini waxers from His and Hers Waxing recommend that men try waxing at least once and see that there’s nothing to fear.
A Trend or Not
There is an increase in manscaping, and this has led to more men going to have their hair removed by waxing. Among men, there is a wide range of percentages of men who have their pubic hairs waxed. In some areas of the country, it can be as high as 30% of male customers and as low as 5%. This is just an estimate based on waxer’s experience, and not from a definitive study. The popular style also varies in different areas.
There are some areas where men would like to have a Brazilian wax with the top untouched but clean around the edges. In other areas of the country, the trend is to have it completely bare from belly button to the pubic bone up front. Still, in some areas, the style is to have it short on top with waxed edges and genitals, as well as the butt strip. It is not uncommon for both sexes to like the butt strip waxed.
The global market is booming. In 2015, the male grooming market reached close to $20 billion in sales. The Chinese market experienced 20% yearly growth since 2010, with a 300% increase in male grooming and beauty sales in 2015 alone. In Canada, it is expected to grow to a $1 billion market by 2020.
The market is diverse as well. Up to 70% of the male clients go for back waxing. Other popular services include brow and chest waxing. Those with tattoos also have their arms waxed to show off their inks. Brazilian waxing for men or Manzilian is getting more common as well.
