New Study Cites the Benefit of Eating Seafood to Cognition

One way that the bounty of the sea can help you live a better life is by slowing the process of cognitive decline.

The Study

Aging is a biological process that leads to the wearing down of our vital organs, including the brain. The aging process remains the leading cause of cognitive decline and poses a potential risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

But a study published in Neurology in 2016 revealed a close association between seafood and reduction in the rate of cognitive decline. The researchers learned that those who ate more seafood had slower semantic memory decline. It means they tend to retain much of their verbal information. They also possessed better perceptual speed than those who ate less seafood. The benefits remain consistent even if they considered other factors. Additionally, seafood consumption reportedly had a strong positive impact on individuals at risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

A Rich Source of Omega-3

How is seafood able to slow down the rate of cognitive deterioration? The answer lies in omega-3.

There are three different types of omega-3 fatty acids. These are DHA, EPA, and ALA. Of the three, DHA and EPA have a strong link with the brain, as they are abundant in its cells.

Interestingly, though, the body cannot produce these important types of fat from scratch. Instead, it takes it from an external source. While nuts and seeds are a good source of omega-3, marine products such as fish are packed with DHA and EPA.

Omega-3 fatty acids may also help control or reduce chronic inflammation, which can be a contributing factor to age-related cognitive decline.

At some point, a person will typically lose a percentage of his or her cognitive process. But that doesn’t have to happen fast. Eating seafood once or thrice a week can continue to enrich the brain with the necessary nutrients.
